The role of the Children’s Reporter
The Children’s Reporter is someone who helps decide whether a child or young person needs extra support through Scotland’s Children’s Hearings System. Referrals are made to the Reporter when there are worries about a child or young person’s wellbeing, safety or development. The Reporter carefully looks at information from different services and decides whether a Children’s Hearing is needed to help put support in place.
If a Children’s Hearing goes ahead, the Reporter prepares the information that explains why the referral has been made and supports the hearing process so it runs smoothly. The Reporter works independently to make sure decisions are fair and focused on what is best for the child or young person. In some situations, the Reporter may also be involved in court proceedings. Throughout everything they do, the Reporter’s role is to help ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time.
